Gift guides are great resources during the holiday season, but they can be counter productive to your holiday shopping if you are looking for the perfect gift with no idea of what to buy. When I was first introduced to gift guides, I thought they included more than they led on. After searching through a couple of gift guides, I came to the conclusion that most gift guides were more like a ball pit in a play place. However, instead of what seems like a bottomless pit filled with balls, it’s like a bottomless pit filled with gift ideas that are just that… ideas.
The last thing you need is a gift guide filled with more ideas to crowd your brain. You need help with gift giving and a gift guide filled with ways to brainstorm the perfect gift. So if that’s your goal, then keep reading.
There might be people on your list that seem difficult to shop for, but they may not be that difficult to please. You want to be sure to stay focused when buying gifts for them. It will make your gift giving experience so much easier. Try to keep these gift giving tips in mind:
Sidenote: It will make things easier for you if you are able to ask the person what they want and then refer to following. If you’re not in a position to ask the person what they want, then don’t worry! The information in this post will still work to your advantage as long as you read it all the way to the end!
4 Helpful Gift Giving Tips
Be Practical
Don’t be the kind of person that gives somebody something that you think they want or need. Give them exactly what they said they wanted. Nothing is more disappointing than telling someone you want something and getting something inexplicably different. There is also nothing better than having mentioned wanting something in the past and getting the aforementioned item as a present later. It shows you’ve been listened to. If you want to take is a step further, keep reading to see how you can add some meaning to the gift too!
Use The Element of Surprise
Try to stay away from the idea of buying something that someone is really into. It sounds cliche but hear me out. If you knew someone who is passionate about plants, then you wouldn’t buy them plants. They already know about plants. Chances are that their plant collection is something they continuously invest in. Instead, stem for that idea and get them something that every plant lovers wants or scroll further to see what questions you should ask yourself to find the perfect gift!
Quality Over Quantity
If your motto is go big or go home, then you may want to go home to sit this one out (unless you’re giving the gift of financial stability. lol! ). Presentation matters more than the number of items that fill the room. You could have a million little gifts, but if only one gifts meet the receivers standards then the rest of those gifts will go to waste. Unless it’s a million one dollar bills….
Add Some Meaning
Have you heard of the phrase “it’s the little things that matter the most”? Your gift doesn’t have to be expensive, plentiful or massive. It can be an item that acts as a symbol of your relationship to the person. You could also do something as simple and easy as writing something meaningful in a card or text message.

I also have this struggle when gift giving too! But yes, I know I seem mean when I do this but I tend to prioritize practicality (what they actually need) instead of buying them something they want. My thinking usually is they may not appreciate what I give them as of the moment but eventually they will, and that’s the person who’ll thank me soon enough.
Don’t worry, I still do sometimes. Especially when it boils down to last minute shopping. A lot of times practical gifts turn out to be the thing they never knew they needed. While they may not seem excited about it or pretend to be excited about it, there’s a slight chance that they might genuinely become attached to the item later on. I live for those rare “I didn’t like it when I got it, but now I use it everyday” conversations. Lol!
Wow awesome tips you have here.? I will try this this to surprise a friend ?.I hope he will like it.
